    Jan 01,  · "Air from Other Planets" is a truly beautiful ballad (and would have probably become a standard had it appeared on a 'jazz name' album). The arrangements are fine cool-school examples and it makes you wonder what Gulda could have made of a "Birth of the Cool" line-up/5(8).

    Friedrich Gulda was best known for his classical playing as a child prodigy in the mid 's and into adulthood. However, after hearing Count Basie in the mid 's Gulda made the bold move to try his hand at jazz, which I'm sure was more than a little controversial considering the attitude of classical music purists and the fact that jazz was a relatively new medium at the time.
